The optimization of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vertiport locations is crucial for efficient air travel in urban areas. Considering the public interest, we conducted a study to optimize vertiport locations on Jeju Island in Korea. Previous studies have focused on optimizing vertiport locations based on accessibility and demand. However, our study incorporated noise issues inherent in UAM tasks. The proposed approach mathematically formulated the problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) with factors such as foot traffic, residential population, and maximum cruising distance for UAM vehicles. The optimization was performed using the Gurobi solver. Jeju Island was selected as a case study for its unique geography, popularity, and upcoming air taxi service, which is ideal for assessing UAM systems. The methodology identified potential vertiport locations that balance public profit while considering noise constraints. We conducted a parameter study to demonstrate the impact of budget change on selected locations, providing valuable insights for decision-making. The proposed methodology aids UAM industry stakeholders and local governments in selecting optimal vertiport locations, fostering sustainable transportation with minimal negative societal impacts. The methodology can also be easily applied to other regions, making it adaptable.
