Abstract

There have been many studies on expletive it. We reviewed various approaches to expletive it from Transformational Grammar to Government-Binding framework and to Minimalist Program. We also studied the problems raised in the process of extraposing that-clause from the subject and object positions. Postal and Pullum(1988) as well as many other linguists concluded that there remains a problem how case features of T and V or v are checked. It is concluded that even if there has been a distinction between the dependent and independent feature checking, it-expletive still cannot be checked its case features against the features of T and V (or v). We have also raised another problem on Yoon(2002)'s theory of two distinctive movements of subject and object it-expletives at PF and syntax level respectively for EPP feature checking.
