Observation of the photorefractive behaviors in the polymer nanocomposite based on p-PMEH-PPV/CdSe-nanoparticle matrix

This paper reports the organic/inorganic hybridized polymer system which combines the CdSe semiconductor nanoparticle, a conjugated PPV derivative polymer, and a DO3 NLO chromophores to manifest a photorefractive (PR) effect. It was confirmed that the CdSe colloidal particles had a nanoscale size and quantum confinement effect adopting TEM, and UV-VIS spectroscopy. The application of CdSe nanoparticle as a photosensitizer in the PPV PR system was realized using the properties of the high quantum efficiency of photosensitization and high hole transport to conducting polymer. The p-PMEH-PPV was used as matrix, pi-conjugated polymers, which are known to be better photoconductors owing to the possibility of delocalizing charges along one polymer chain without hopping. This advantageous combination of CdSe nanoparticle and PPV conjugated polymer leads that the gain coefficient of the PR system possessing CdSe nanoparticles in PPV derivative matrix was enhanced a lot comparing with the PVK system with TNF or without photosensitizer.
