Event-Based control of 4D effects using MPEG RoSE

Abstract

With the increase of number of theme parks and thus accessibility, simple rides no longer are enough to meet the customers’ expectations. To meet the customers’ demand of extraordinary experiences and entertainment, theme parks are evolving into all-around amusement facility integrated with high technology. One of the most rapidly developing examples of this is the 4D theater, which is the combination of 3D film and sensory (or 4D) effects such as wind, fog, vibration, water shots, and scent to provide a more realistic and immersive experience to the audience. These theaters that are currently in service in various theme parks such as Disney Land and Universal Studios, but they define and handle 4D effects data differently. This not only means that time, money and effort are invested repeatedly to develop similar types of systems in each company, but also that the contents aren’t interoperable, which impedes further development and popularization of 4D theaters. This research proposes a method of defining 4D effects data using MPEG RoSE and controlling the 4D effects on event-basis using an event library to increase the extendibility, and provide data reusability as well as interoperability of contents.
