Syntheses of several new tetravalent phosphorus-containing heterocycles from isopropylphosphonic dichloride and from isopropylphosphonothioic dichloride are investigated. Isopropylphosphonic dichloride is prepared by the aluminum chloride method (Kinnear-Perren reaction). Isopropylphosphonothioic dichloride is obtained by the high-temperature reaction of phosphorus pentasulfide with isopropylphosphonic dichloride. These compounds are then esterified with ethylene glycol, mercaptoethanol, ethanedithiol, 2,3-buthanediol, propylene glycol, 2-phenyl-1,2-ethanediol, and 1,3-buthanediol, related phosphorus-containing heterocycle. Triethylamine is used as the hydrochloric acid trapping agent. The structure of phospholanes and phosphorinanes are characterized by its IR, $^1H$ NMR, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry. It is recognized that the electron impact mass spectrometry is a useful method for the characterization of phosphorus-containing heterocycles.
