The reaction of Os3(CO)10(NCMe)2 with a tungsten alkylidyne Cp(CO)2W = CTol (Cp = eta-5-C5H5, Tol = p - C6H4Me) produces the compound, CpWOs3(CO)11(mu-3-CTol)(1). The structure of compound 1 can be viewed as one in which the metalla-alkyne, Cp(CO)2W = CTol, is mu-3-eta-2-perpendicular-to (perpendicular) bound to an Os3(CO)9 fragment. Variable-temperature C-13 NMR spectra of 1 show no evidence for the analogous rotation of the metalla-alkyne molecule as shown alkyne rotation in Os3(CO)9(C2Tol2) compound. This lack of the metalla-alkyne fluxionality supports the apparent saturated nature of compound 1.
