Electroactive behavior of poly(acrylic acid) grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) samples, their synthesis using a Ce-(IV) glucose redox system and their characterization

Graft copolymer of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was prepared by the Ce(IV) glucose redox initiator by free radical polymerization. Three graft copolymers having % grafting of 20, 50 and 80 were selected for this study. Thus modified polymer was characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, GPC, TGA and UTM. The membranes were prepared by solution casting method, where crosslinking process was performed by the in-situ addition of glutaraldehyde and hydrochloric acid as a crosslinking agent and catalyst respectively. The following four membranes were prepared (i) pure PVA (P-1) (ii) 20 % grafted (P-2) (iii) 50 % grafted (P-3) and (iv) 80 % grafted (P-4). The obtained membranes were employed for the electroactive behavior under a DC electric stimulus in different concentrations of electrolyte. The equilibrium bending angle (EBA) of these polymers were studied with respect to time, poly(acrylic acid) content, electric voltage applied across the polymer and ionic strength of the electrolyte used. Experimental results show the stable reversibility of bending behavior of these polymers under applied DC electric field. EBA increased with increase in applied electric voltage and poly(acrylic acid) content within the polymer.
