The bed porosity and the individual phase holdup characteristics in three phase fluidized beds with a wide range of liquid properties have been examined. The effects of liquid and gas velocities, particle size, column diameter and liquid surface tension; it decreases withe gas velocity and viscosity, whereas it decreases with increasing particle size, liquid surface tension and the density difference between solid and liquid phases. Bedporosity increases withe gas velocity in the initial bed expansion regime, but it shows a minimum value with respect to gas velocity in the initial bed contraction regime. The liqid phase holdup and the bed porosity data bave been combined with over5000 points from the literature to yield dimensionless correlations.
