Forging experiments for axi-symmetric cup-type of AISI4130 have been made using physical modeling in the present study. Because of limit of the machine capacity available in industry, the heavy-forging product cannot be formed by one blow. Thus, forging process has been divided into several stages, The process design becomes the most important procedure for this case. In order to reduce die manufacturing cost, physical modeling technique using plasticine and lead was adopted in checking the forging process to make defect-free product. The forging load was predicted by slab analysis for its convenience. Comparison of the predicted loads by the slab analysis and the experimentation shows good agreement. The process design of cup-type heavy forging products was successfully achieved by combining physical modeling and slab analysis in the present investigation. As a result, it was found out that slab analysis and physical modeling are the appropriate and practical approach for process design in small forging industry.
