Composite pressure vessels are increasingly being used because of their high specific strength and specific stiffness over their metal counterparts, as well as excellent corrosion and fatigue resistance. In this study, optical fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensors and strain gages were attached on the surface of a filament wound composite tank(ASTEB) to monitor the strains during pressurization. The wavelength-swept fiber laser(WSFL) was used to interrogate the FBG sensors. The FBG sensors showed close agreement with strain gage.
