In this study, based on the concepts of fiber optic smart structures, an intensity-based optical fiber sensor(IBS) was applied to monitor the crack growth due to the various repeated loads in steel structures. To understand the characteristics of the IBS, a basic test concerning the spacing-intensity behavior of the sensor was performed. Then, fatigue crack monitoring experiments were performed with steel specimens on which the IBS was attached. Two attached locations on the specimen of the IBS were chosen; one is below and the other is across the path of fatigue crack growth. Experimental results showed that the strain change near the crack tip due to the fatigue crack growth can be detected by the attached IBS and the IBS itself is highly resistant to the fatigue loading. Based on this experimental study, the feasibility of continuous realtime monitoring of fatigue damage in structures was presented.-
