Acoustic plane-wave scattering from a circular aperture in a thick hard screen is reexamined. The Hankel transform is applied to express the scattered field in the spectral domain and the boundary conditions are enforced to obtain simultaneous equations for the transmitted field inside the thick hard screen. The simultaneous equations are solved to represent the transmitted and scattered fields in series forms. Numerical computations are performed To illustrate the behavior of scattering and transmission in terms of the aperture size, frequency, and incident angle. It is found that scattering from a circular pit exhibits the resonance versus the pit depth when the pit radius is larger than a wavelength. The numerical comparisons to other available data show excellent agreement. The presented series solution is numerically efficient and general in that it includes scattering from a circular aperture, pit, and semi-infinite pipe altogether.
