This paper deals with the detailed development of an ultra-precision lathe for the purpose of machining magnetic disks. The rotational and feed accuracy and stiffness of the air bearing and the air slide were tested, respectively. A micro-cutting device using a piezoelectric material was also developed in order to maintain a uniform and precise depth of cut. Experiments machining a magnetic disk were carried out.-
