We have studied the surface activity of polyethyleneoxide (PEO) by measuring the reduction of the surface tension of an aqueous solution. The surface adsorption of PEO is strongly dependent on the polymer molecular weight and the concentration. These findings are confirmed with the results of the ellipsometry measurement which provides the total adsorbed amount of the polymer. Furthermore, the changes of surface waves due to the adsorbed layers is detected by surface wave spectroscopy. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
