The glass forming range of the ternary Al-Ni-Y system has been predicted and compared with experimental measurements. A thermodynamic method was used to obtain T-o curves of binary, Al-Ni, Ni-Y and Y-Al, and the ternary Al-Ni-Y. T-g was approximated by T-x, and T-x was derived from its kinetic relationship with hole formation enthalpy. Based on the magnitude between T-o and T-g, the glass forming range was determined. A wide range was obtained because of the upper limit concept for T-g. This approach can be used as a guide to predict the glass forming range of binary, ternary and higher component systems.
