Local strain measurement system inside the triaxial cell is being adopted in the resilient modulus (MR) test to eliminate the source of errors in deformational measurements at small to intermediate strains. However, this technique is difficult to implement in routine tests due to its inherent complexities. Hence, external MR measurement with the specimen grouted to the end platens with hydrostone paste is proposed as an alternative solution. Six synthetic specimens of known stiffnesses were used to investigate the effects of specimen grouting as well as the stiffness range on reliable external MR measurements. In addition, compacted subgrades were used to study the effects of specimen grouting. Finally, the results obtained are presented.
