As one of major pollution sources, livestock waste causes surface and groundwater pollution, eutrophication of lake and reservoir as well as degradation of living environment due to malodor and insects. The purpose of this study is to suggest a reasonable alternatives for livestock wastes based on the survey of current management schemes in livestock farms. Field survey indicated that farmers could not afford to manage livestock wastes properly, especially in piggery farm. Without proper treatment facilities, pig manure was usually open dumped. In most large farms who used activated sludge system and land application of the effluent have to consume large quantity of dilution water and suffer from operation difficulty.
In order to lessen the pollution load from the livestock farms, the following management methods were proposed. In middle and small size farms, the livestock wastes should be collected in central plants and large farms should improve treatment efficiency of the facilities by introducing new technologies and recover valuable energy and/or by products. For the successful fulfillment of this management policy, proper legislation on effluent standard and enforcement should be made.
