A new detection method for the symbol rate of unknown PSK (phase shift keying) and QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) passband input signals is presented. In the detector, the input signal envelope obtained from the analytic signal is used to extract a line spectrum corresponding to the symbol rate. Simulation results show that the detector using absolute-valued signal envelope can detect the symbol rate accurately even for the input signal having small excess bandwidth.
