There is great interest in using RF or microwave subcarrier multiplexing for high-capacity lightwave system. The term subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) is used to describe the capability of multiplexing both multichannel analog and digital signals within the same system. SCM optical links have traditionally been used in CATV systems and antenna remoting applications for transmission of analog signals. With the integration of communication services and growing demand for bandwidth, SCM is being combined with wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) to form high-capacity, more sophisticated networks capable of supporting two-way voice, data, and video communications. All-optical switching networks require a simple and effective method to swap headers in real time without affecting the payload data to realize low-latency packet forwarding and routing [1]. Several reports have been proposed and have demonstrated optical network techniques incorporating SCM optical header [2-5]. In order to prevent RF fading effects from the interaction between the double-sideband (DSB) SCM signals and the optical carrier due to the fiber chromatic dispersion, some reports have proposed optical filtering methods using a tunable fiber Fabry-Perot filter, or a fiber loop mirror filter, which is bulky in nature [2],[3]. The use of compact and specially designed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filter was suggested [4], which was also sensitive to environmental variations. In the orthogonal modulation scheme [5], crosstalk between the modulated payload and header signal is generated during transmission. This thesis proposes and demonstrates a simple and robust SCM header generation and detection scheme based on the optical nonlinear 2nd harmonic ($2\omega_{sc}$) modulation with the suppressed optical carrier for all-optical switching network. DSB-SCM optical header signal is modulated on the second harmonic optical subcarrier frequency ($2\omega_{sc}$), which is widely separated from the baseban...
