The increased availability and usage of digital video lead to a need for automated video content analysis techniques. For video contents analysis, the shot boundary detection of digital video is essential and fundamental. One of the most representative shot boundary detection methods is that of hierarchical summary in the international standard technology MPEG-7. The experimental results of shot boundary detection of hierarchical summary show that it is inefficient in terms of processing time, and ineffective in terms of detection rate and accuracy. For more efficient and effective shot boundary detection than that of hierarchy summary, in this paper, we propose the dc image-based shot boundary detection method using the MPEG-7 color descriptor so that it gets higher efficiency of processing time, detection rate, and accuracy than them of hierarchical summary. Conventional shot boundary detection methods for compressed video in a storage may be inefficient in terms of computational time because they need additional processing time for automated video contents analysis after acquiring and editing video. Therefore, in this paper, we also propose the digital video camera system that can provide real-time shot boundary detection using the MPEG-7 descriptor. The video camera system is built so that MPEG-7 descriptors are extracted from frames of video in real time. In result, the shot boundaries are achieved by measuring a distance of MPEG-7 descriptors for consecutive frames in real-time. Experimental results showed that the proposed dc image-based method provides efficient and effective shot boundary detection for the MPEG coded digital video in a storage, and the proposed video camera system provides fast and effective real-time shot boundary detection.
