dc.description.abstract | Recently, the demand for mobile services through wireless medium has been increased. In order to meet this demand, wireless access technologies, i.e., WLAN, WiBro, WCDMA, have been developed. The IP-based heterogeneous wireless network was proposed to integrate all of these access technologies into IP-based backbone network. One of the important issues in heterogeneous wire-less network is to track the location of mobile terminal as the users roam. Since existing wireless access networks perform the location management function independently, the mobile terminal with multiple interfaces performs location management separately at access network. In this paper, we propose to manage the location management simultaneously in heterogeneous network. However, we concern that the location management in heterogeneous network doesn``t allow cost overhead against single access network. Location management has two operational procedures; location update and terminal paging. For location update, the analytical model for movement of mobile terminal with multiple interfaces is needed. In proposed modeling, the mobile terminal performs location updates using simultaneous crossing ratio in heterogeneous network. For terminal paging, we propose the paging algorithm using overlapped area. The global location register generates the overlapped area for mobile terminal with multiple interfaces then, it sends paging message to designated cells in overlapped paging area. In performance analysis, we find that the mobile terminal with two interfaces performs the location update 18 times against the mobile terminal with single interface. On the other hands, the number of cells in proposed paging area of mobile terminal with multiple interfaces is about 5% the one in existing paging area. Therefore, the overall management cost in heterogeneous network doesn``t exceed the cost in single access network.
