The research related to the mobility support in the Internet can be classified into two fields. One is macro mobility and the other is micro mobility. In case of macro mobility, the standard, RFC 2002, by IETF is getting focused. But for micro mobility, a variety of strategies have been discussed. A mobile node (MN) registers with its Home Agent (HA) when it moves to another foreign network. When it is far away from the HA, registration with its HA results in significant performance reduction such as handoff delay. In this thesis, we introduce the concept of local agent (LA) and propose the strategy that makes it possible for the location agent to fully concern frequent local handoff by minimizing interruption of HA. The LA of a MN serves as the current location of the MN at the HA, and handles local movements of the MN directly through local registrations. Registrations with the HA can change the LA of a MN but are performed much less frequently and do not involve changing the point of network attachment of a MN. In this thesis we analyzes the performance of Mobile IP and the extension with LAs in terms of registration cost, handoff delay. The results show that LAs reduce the overall registration cost and the handoff delay significantly. The handoff delay is bounded, independent of the distance of a MN from its HA. When a MN is close to home, Mobile IP is more efficient and is the special case where the LA coincides with the HA.
