Managing shared resources with information-based coordination mechanism

Abstract

There is a pervasive feeling in business today that the pace of change is accelerating and that we need to create business processes that are more flexible and adaptive to respond to the new business environments. Within this context, efficient and effective resource utilization is becoming more critical and there has been a growing interest in questions about how the shared resources among organizational units can be coordinated in an effective and efficient manner from the organization``s perspective. Together, these changes with the dramatic improvements in the costs and capabilities of information technologies may soon lead us across a threshold where entirely new ways of managing shared resources become desirable. This research introduces an alternative approach to managing shared resources that an enterprize uses to conduct its business specially focusing on the coordination mechanisms and the contingency model for selection of appropriate coordination mechanisms based on resource sharing situations. Special attention is paid to information-based coordination approach and coordination strategy is proposed.
