Since mid 1990, knowledge management has brought many attentions from the academic world as well as actual business fields. It has been accepted that the knowledge is a core factor for shareholder``s value and its generation, storage, and reuse increase competing power of the company. Currently, a variety of conceptual and applicable researches are active. However, as a major factor for knowledge management, the study about differentiated features of knowledge management system is rare.
In major issues related with knowledge management system, integration of knowledge resources is very critical. Knowledge resources become diversified and unifying various resources for specific business goals and problems increases the value of knowledge.
Integration of knowledge resources requires the followings. First, in order to shape personal tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge, a flexible representation scheme is required. Second, for easy and flexible separation and linkage of knowledge resources object-oriented storage structure is helpful. Third, system functions for integrating knowledge resources in various ways should be developed. Existing knowledge management systems such as groupware, Internet, document management system do not support these requirements.
The major objective of this dissertation is to propose a conceptual framework and method for flexible representation and integration of different knowledge resources. In addition, Enterprise Model Repository (EMR) as an alternative for knowledge management system is proposed. EMR is a knowledge management system, which store and manage schematic models, hypermedia, and document files in an integrated framework.
