dc.description.abstract | Significant progress has been recently achieved in developing dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) with low cost and high solar-power efficiencies by use of largely thick (~ 12 μm) $TiO_2$ nanoparticle films, or wide band gap semi-conducting oxides comprising one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures and two-dimensional (2D) building blocks. These have included single crystalline ZnO nanowires, quasi-ordered arrays of $TiO_2$ nanotubes, core-shell structures and 2D hollow structures assembled by colloidal templates. In nanoparticle-based DSCs, high efficiencies are often limited due to their disordered geometrical structures and interfacial interferences in electron transport, thus resulting in reduced electron mobility. To overcome these barriers, the electron collectors with the architectures of 1D and 2D single crystalline nanostructures could offer the opportunity to create enhanced surface activities promoting dye absorption as well as enabling the fast and effective transport of electrons to the collection electrode with the suppressed recombination, resulting in improved conversion efficiencies. In spite of these efforts on achieving improved surface activities for highly efficient-DSCs, there are still increasing demands for the construction of the DSCs using thin film based photo-electrodes with polycrystalline structure. Sufficient adjustability and flexibility in controlling the geometrical and physical properties of 1D or 2D nanostructures are required to satisfy the superior photo-conversion efficiencies for the advanced thin-film based solar cells. However, there have been little reports on processing strategies to provide markedly enhanced surface activities and photo-current efficiency for the thin film $TiO_2$electrodes below 1-2 μm and also the in-depth studies on 2D nanostructures using dense $TiO_2$ electrodes prepared by physical vapor deposition, i.e., RF-sputtering etc. has been relatively rare. In particular, dense $TiO_2$electrodes by RF-sputt... | eng |
