dc.description.abstract | Wireless ATM is the next-generation technology that can provide broadband services for mobile multimedia terminals. To achieve this, the fixed ATM protocol must be augmented with mobility management capabilities. One of the important components of mobility management is the ability of the network to seamlessly reroute existing connection to different parts of the network. To date, a number of schemes in this area have been proposed for broadband wireless networks. However, among them the schemes which attain low handoff latency usually have the feature that network resources are inefficiently utilized. In this thesis, we propose a fast rerouting scheme for wireless ATM called Path Reservation Scheme. The proposed scheme utilizes the concepts of cell clustering and grouping. Path reservation scheme is a kind of hybrid handoff scheme. In cluster Path Extension scheme is used, and for inter-cluster handoff Dynamic Rerouting scheme is utilized. Clustering cells prohibits the path excessively long, so that network bandwidth is saved. And grouping cells in cluster is used to reserve the paths to the handoff candidate cells. Reserving the paths reduces COS search time and enables fast handoff. According to the simulation results Path Reservation scheme achieves good performance not only in complexity and handoff delay but also in buffer and bandwidth requirements. It means that when the proposed scheme is adopted network hardware cost can be decreased and bandwidth efficiently used. | eng |
