dc.description.abstract | The pervasiveness of conventional information displays, which are basically designed to attract the user’s focus of attention, has resulted in information overload. But “calm technology” is looking to change that with a peripheral display that displays information at the user’s periphery of attention in non-intrusive manner. However, there are many peripheral displays that have relatively low awareness and utilize only noncritical information. Furthermore, it is hard to determine the awareness of the peripheral display due to differences in each individual’s periphery of attention. By adopting the technologies of the attention aware system, we present a concept of an attention aware peripheral display which is able to change its awareness dynamically by measuring the user’s gaze. From the requirement analysis, we specified the functions of our concept and designed the system with Attention Measurement, Notification Control, and Peripheral Display Control. We implemented the prototype by augmenting the conventional peripheral display device with an infrared camera and software supporting gaze detection. To compare the proposed method with the conven-tional static awareness peripheral display, we conducted user tests using three primary tasks while receiving peripheral stock information. From quantitative and qualitative analyses of the results, our implementation confirmed our hypo-theses and fulfilled our requirements. The degrees of task performance and user satisfaction were almost identical with typical peripheral display, but the proposed method received better scores in the aspects of information delivery. In this thesis, we will introduce the background of this study and related works, and discuss the specification and implementations details of the proposed concept.
