Measurement-based traffic management schemes for quality demanding services in NGNNGN 품질보장형 서비스에 대한 측정 기반 트래픽 관리기술에 대한 연구

The critical concerns in network management is how deliver services to end-users without degrading service quality especially in quality demanding services such as video on demand (VoD), game, video live streaming, and internet protocol television (IPTV). Degrading service quality eventually degrades quality of experience (QoE) of users and it causes decrement of revenues to network providers. So far, in next generation networks (NGNs) and best-effort networks, there are challenges to obtain quality indexes (i.e., packet loss, delay, jitter and etc) at both the network level and the user level. At the network level, network performance information can be ob-tained by conventional network measurement schemes or tools. However, as growing size, complexity, and dynamic characteristics of network and service infrastructures make it difficult to measure performance of networks with conventional measurement schemes and tools. To deliver services without any degrading service quality to user, network management not only should provide accurate network quality indexes and application information with network management functions, but also try to prevent QoS and QoE degradation. In these perspectives, this thesis covers three critical research issues on the network management from the network level to the user level. First, to retrieve application information, the packet classification is essential. Packet classification, also, is one of the promising functions in NGN for a variety management applications including quality management of services, security, monitoring, and billing. The conventional traffic classification methods such as port-based and signature-based are not appropriate for emerged services in the current Internet due to their limitations.
