Recently, energy management has emerged as a service for residential networks. The home network was among the emerging areas from the last century. However, the growth of the home network market is stationary at present. This paper describes the limitations of the home network system and the requirements for overcoming the current limitations with the incorporation of a smart grid. Additionally, a model and architecture of a new context-aware home energy management system known as COWS (Combination of OSGi and Web Services) is described along with its straightforward installation into both of new and existing houses and its scalable operation with the use of service packages. The new concept of an e-health management system as a service package of COWS (COWS-H) is proposed. Third-party service providers register their health care services with the system and then provide a variety of services, such as health diagnosis services and long-term health management, without the need for expensive special instruments. Instead, conventional electric appliances are utilized. A smart meter is the most essential component of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). It connects the home energy management system of individual residences and a smart grid that optimizes the production, distribution, and consumption of electric power. A smart multi-power tap (SMPT) is an advanced multi-outlet power-strip-type smart meter that provides important contextual information such as the identity and location of electric home appliances on the basis of the temporal power consumption data and the control of the power supply to the appliances. A mathematical model of cascade connections among SMPTs and a solution for obtaining the location information of a tree structure is able to determine the location of appliances when the connections among SMPTs form the tree structure and the performance is evaluated. Power consumption feedback information using an AMI and smart meters is known a...
