This thesis presents a digitally-assisted subsampling receiver architecture, tightly integrating the noise properties with communication algorithms and circuit-level design to modify the existing trade-off between analog-to-digital conversion precision and signal-to-noise ratio. The proposed ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless receiver achieves comparable bit-error rate (BER) performance to traditional direct-conversion receivers while reducing the power consumption by nearly a factor of two. We modeled a UWB communication system based on multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to estimate the performance enhancement and power reduction by the digitally-assisted subsampling. Our model represents the statistics of time-domain UWB signals over a wireless channel to reflect the impact of quantization noise at a receiver analog-to-digital converter (ADC). In order to reduce quantization noise in ADC, we propose a fine tracking automatic dynamic range control for each OFDM symbol, after coarse automatic gain control is performed for the preamble symbols at the front of an OFDM frame. This dynamic range adjustment of the analog-to-digital conversion allows the reduction of ADC precision requirement while maintaining the quantization noise power. This new digital assistance is initiated from digital baseband back-end by decoding the peak magnitude of the next coming OFDM symbol, and is performed by setting ADC reference ladder circuit block. For system-level receiver design including analog front-end and digital back-end, we formulate a power-constrained BER optimization problem. With this optimization framework based on the UWB communication system model, we show that the energy-efficiency improvement from the ADC precision reduction, obtained by the digital assistance, heavily depends on OFDM symbol clipping level.
