In this thesis, we propose new antenna selection algorithms for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. We consider the selection only at the receiver (i.e., the transmitter employs the same number of RF chains as antenna elements, whereas the receiver utilizes a reduced number of RF chains). We propose two antenna selection algorithms. The proposed algorithms are based on the norm and correlation (or uncorrelation) between rows of the channel matrix. The selection goal is to maximize the channel capacity. The proposed algorithms search for the channel matrix which has maximally uncorrelated rows with maximum norms to maximize the capacity. The first proposed algorithm defines a cost function and maximizes it to obtain maximum capacity. It requires only vector multiplications, which result in low computational complexity. In the specific case, the proposed scheme shows near-optimal performance. The second proposed algorithm modifies an existing scheme and improves the performance. Through simulations, we demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed schemes.
