In this dissertation resource management schemes for realtime traffic are investigated to support end-user mobility and multi-media services in wireless ATM networks. In the first part of this dissertation, wireline resources are managed dynamically to support fast handoff and to increase wireline utilization. Pre-allocated switched virtual connections (PSVCs) are assigned for realtime handoff calls to extend pre-established communication paths. For handoff calls of realtime traffic, the processing overhead of switched virtual connection (SVC) establishments to new BSs can be minimized during handoff procedures and the corresponding handoff delay time can also be reduced. Since the wireline link bandwidth is used on demand, the link bandwidth is used due to statistical multiplexing effects. It is shown that the proposed scheme without path-loop elimination uses only approximately 80 % of the required bandwidth of the PVC scheme while supporting fast handoff. And if the path-loop elimination is applied to the DPC scheme, the required wireline bandwidth reduces significantly to the minimum one. Heterogeneous single-connection calls and multi-connection calls are analyzed by a birth-death approximation and an iteration method, respectively. In the second part of this dissertation, a slotted CDMA system is considered in order to integrate various types of services at an air interface. Packets from realtime traffic sources may suffer from random access delays due to contentions with packets from non-realtime traffic sources. Four schemes are proposed to give priorities to the request packets of realtime traffic in order to meet the allowable loss requirement for realtime traffic. A Markovian analysis model for realtime traffic and an equilibrium point analysis (EPA) model for non-realtime traffic are introduced in a heterogeneous traffic environment. The correlation among various traffic types is analyzed using these approaches. Realtime traffic experiences pa...
