Distributed catalog management based on regionalized-catalog distribution

Abstract

Due to the rapid growth of demand on information communication and the advancement of the computer network technologies, the development of heterogeneous distributed database management systems (HDDBMSs) is necessary to manage the cooperative processing among the database systems geographically distributed. In particular, the management of catalog, which facilitates the accesses to distributed data, is one of crucial functions of distributed database management systems (DDBMSs).

In order to maintain the superb performance of DDBMS, we propose the regionalized-catalog distribution (RCD) strategy for the architecture of distributing global catalogs. In addition to this, the concurrency control and recovery (CCR) mechanism of catalog objects is proposed on the basis of RCD. Finally, we design and implement the global catalog manager (GCM) on the basis of RCD and the CCR mechanism.
