A new method of optical short-pulse generation using stable laswrs with negative optoelectronic feedback is proposed. Optical pulses with repetition rates of several gigahertz can be generated with a calculated pulse width of the order of a picosecond, and the required gain-bandwidth product of the feedback network is a few tens of gigahertz. This method dees not require any external modulation signal, and it is not susceptible to critical optical alignment.
