The synthetic utility of magnesium bromide has been investigated, and it has been found that magnesium bromide can be used as a mild and efficient reagent for the deprotection of methoxymethyl, methoxyethoxymethyl, methylthiomethyl, and $\beta$ -(trimethylsilyl)-ethoxymethyl esters. Alkyl(methyl, ethyl, $\beta$ -(trimethylsilyl) ethyl) esters are not effected by magnesium bromide. The selective deprotection of methoxymethyl, methoxyethoxymethyl, methylthiomethyl, and $\beta$ -(trimethylsilyl)-ethoxymethyl esters in the presence of methyl, ethyl, $\beta$ -(trimethylsilyl) ethyl ester was also performed successfully with magmesium bromide.
