The central government recently proposed a guideline considering that a new residential area should give up the traditional gated community mode. Large gated communities with wide roads become an obstacle for daily travel and are considered to resulting in flow superposition and class antagonism. Opening gates might lead to a compatible community promoting communication among residents. This paper first reviews the gated and open community, a current situation in the road network. In addition, some main problems and challenges are pointed out. Case studies are involved to investigate possible impacts derived by opening the gated community using micro simulation. The simulation results mainly focus on traffic influence analysis through the before-after method. The results indicate the impact of traffic efficiency varies based on many factors including traffic flow, usage of inner roads, speed limit in the community and the number of gates to be opened.
