dc.description.abstract | The present study built a small-scaled, high-temperature arc-jet wind tunnel facility (30 kW-class) for thermal protection system evaluation. Flow properties were measured and estimated to evaluate the facility’s performance. The constructed facility utilizes a Huels-type arc generator with a supersonic nozzle with an exit diameter of 28 mm. The facility’s performance evaluation was performed at the 1.03 g/s of supplied test gas’s mass flow rate and 85 A of input current. An arc column pressure, a pitot pressure, and a stagnation heat flux are measured using cylinder-shaped probes with a diameter of 10 mm, and they were 32.6 kPa, 4.39 kPa, and 1.99 MW/m2, respectively. Based on the measurements, the mass-averaged and centerline enthalpies were estimated as 3.22 MJ/kg and 10.9 MJ/kg, respectively, and the estimated static pressure, temperature, and Mach number at the nozzle exit were 250 Pa, 920 K, and 3.7, respectively. The estimated parameters were compared with large-scaled arc-jet wind tunnel facilities, showing that the present small-scaled facility could simulate a portion of large-scaled facilities’ operational envelope. | - |
