Previous studies on interactive artwork have focused on technical issues or visualization, where audience members were mediators of the interactive artwork through passive activities, rather than creators of the interactive contents via active tasks. This paper defined disruptive activities of interactive artwork to expand interactive aesthetics based on previous research. Through disruptive activities, audience members could perform to achieve their own objective and purpose to become the subject in the interactive artwork. Disruptive activities are characterized by their ability to reflect the audiences’ behavior with regard to their intention for society, culture, and artworks. Disruptive activities are classified into three categories: disruptive aesthetics according to activity theory, activism based on disrupted cultural heritage, and unintended activities by audiences in the Punctum. This study produced interactive artwork, deBallution, based on cultural heritage by applying the factors of the disruptive activities. The study then conducted three tests to evaluate the three factors of disruptive activities through audience participation. In conclusion, disruptive activities by audience members expanded the artistic experience in the interactive artwork according to the three categories. This paper found the new realms of audience activities through the disruptive activities in viewpoint of subject and role of the interactive artwork. Through this research, artists and researchers could produce and study interactive artwork based on the disruptive activities by audience members to expand the aesthetics of interactive artwork beyond technical issues or visualization.
