Valienamine and its related pseudo-sugars are of increasing interest as glycosidase inhibitor because of their potential use as chemotherapeutic agents. Valienamine was reco-vered by ion-exchange chromatography from culture broth of Flavobacterium saccharo-philum. Firstly, a weakly acid resin, $IRC-50((NH_4^ +form)$ was used to recover valienamine and validamine from the broth. The effects of solution PH during sample loading and washing steps were investigated in order to ensure effective recovery of them. Secondly, a column packed with a strongly basic resin, Dowex $1^*2 (OH^- form)$ was used to separate valienamine from validamine in the concentrated mixture from the first stage. The effect the flow rate of water, the eluent was examined for effective sepation of these two compounds. Valienamine in the collected solution was identified by bioassay.
