This study proposed an EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) estimation method considering the Onboard Carbon Capture System (OCCS) and also estimated the life cycle carbon intensity of ship fuel by introducing the OCCS. The OCCS referred to a system that selectively captures and stores carbon dioxide contained in exhaust gas emitted from a ship engine. Prior to designing the OCCS, the current status of greenhouse gas regulation for ships currently being discussed at International Maritime Organization (IMO) was investigated and proposed a new EEDI estimation formula and EEDI estimation method considering the system. Then, the case studies are conducted based on the proposed estimation method in accordance with the strengthening EEDI regulations. In addition, by estimating the life cycle carbon intensity of the ship's fuel considering the carbon dioxide utilization technology, the actual reduction in greenhouse gas emission due to the introduction of the onboard carbon dioxide capture system was evaluated.
