Nonlinear control using input/output linearization and sliding mode control are applied to a batch ester-interchange reactor. The batch esterinterchange reaction requires no overshoot of the reaction temperature in the earlier stage of reaction and tight temperature control throughout the reaction to keep the uniform quality of final product and to prevent the variation of the amount of byproduct like diethylene glycol at each batch. The nonlinear controller shows good control performance satisfying these requirements and sliding mode control algorithm is supplimented to improve the robustness against plant-model mismatch.
