Functionalities of nanostructured materials with organic/inorganic hybrid structure are highly dependent upon the properties of each component, the dimension, final structure, and the interfacial character between two components etc. In this dissertation, polymer nanocomposites doped with metal nanoshell (layered composite nanoparticles) or layered silicates were fabricated and their photonic and electro-responsive properties were characterized. Relationship between interfacial character of each components and the corresponding final nanostructure or material properties was also investigated. In chapter 2, we synthesized gold nanoshell by three different synthetic methods and characterized the nanostructure by TEM and optical properties by UV-visible spectrometer. Gold nanoshells are composite nanoparticles, which consist of a dielectric core (silica nanoparticles) coated with nanometer scale gold shell. These nanoparticles manifest a strong optical resonance that is dependent on the relative thickness of the nanoparticle core and its gold shell. By varying the core and shell thickness, this optical resonance can be placed virtually anywhere across the visible or infrared regions of the optical spectrum. In one-step method, gold nanoshells composed of $Au_2S$ core coated with Au nanolayers were synthesized by mixing HAuCl$_4$ and Na$_2$S. And the relative thickness between core and shell was determined by controlling the relative concentration of the two solutions. In the second method, APTES (aminopropyltriethoxy silane) coupling agent was used as a linker between silica core and outer gold layer. By using the method, various kind of core material (such as SiO$_2$, TiO$_2$, and Polymer latex) can be covalently linked to the outer metallic shell (such as gold, silver and iron), which was impossible in one-step method. Gold-encapsulated silica nanoparticles were also synthesized by a Sn-surface seeding and shell growing method. Sn(tin) atoms are chemically d...
