Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technology can be applied in any of its two variants: Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) and Capacitive Power Transfer (CPT). Both IPT and CPT have their limitations, but a combination of these technologies can bring important benefits in size, weight, and misalignment tolerance. Despite these appealing benefits, a fully combined IPT and CPT system has not been proposed yet. This work presents a novel self-resonant inductive & capacitive power transfer system (ICPT). The ICPT system uses the inductive reactance from coils and the capacitive reactance from aluminum plates to establish a resonant network without external elements (compensation network). An electric circuit model was defined, and simulations were performed for the ICPT system. Finally, the results showed that the ICPT system has competitive electric performance and a robust-misalignment tolerance when compared with equivalent IPT and CPT systems. Moreover, the use of the ICPT system caused a significant weight (12%) and cost (60%) reduction in an example of an application for electric vehicles (EV).
