Travel mode choice behavior after the inception of mass rapid transit operation in Indonesia

Abstract

The cheap selling price of private vehicle and bad service of public transportation are often contributed to the number of congestions so they would be more dependent on private vehicle. Therefore, improve public transportation service quality and quantity often seen as an effort to overcome people dependency on private vehicle use. Hence, Government should implement and introduce a new transportation that would meet commuter needs with a reliable travel time and travel cost. The aim of this study are to examine the commuter choice behavior when a new mode is introduced and also to suggest operational policy taken the inception of MRT in Jakarta as the study case by applying Conditional Logit Model. The model finds out that travel time and fare are the absolute factors affect the choice behavior, while socio-demographic does not give any effect to their choice. Compared to other modes, they show their tendency shifting to the new mode as it provides a better travel time with a competitive fare. Furthermore, the operational of ride-hailing application could cause a significant probability loss of public transit as both of them offer a competitive service. These findings imply the importance of keeping MRT service better than other options and also regulating the ride-hailing application operation, especially at the main corridors and during peak hours. Operation restriction at a particular time and place and also price regulation can be intervened by the government to enhance the new mode operation.
