Graphene has been actively studied in many fields since it has been reported to have excellent electrical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties. In the field of thermoelectric materials with excellent potential in the next-generation green energy field, various attempts have been reported to utilize the excellent performance of graphene. In order to apply such graphene to thermoelectric materials, research to effectively lower the high thermal conductivity of graphene is required first. For this purpose, this study used an approach called “subdomain formation” in graphene grains that can effectively reduce the thermal conductivity of the graphene without significantly reducing the electrical conductivity of the graphene. We synthesized graphene including nano sized subdomain via Mobile Hot Wire CVD system that enables sequential heating of samples, and confirmed the formation of subdomain with high-angle tilt boundaries within the graphene through TEM analysis. In addition, in order to control the density of the high-angle tilt boundary, the high-angle tilt boundary density in the graphene was controlled by using a copper nickel alloy substrate instead of the copper substrate. Similarly, the transmission electron microscope analysis confirmed how the density of the high-angle tilt boundary changed. As a result of measuring the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity of the synthesized graphene, it was confirmed that it has a power factor of about 105% compared to the polycrystalline graphene grown by a general chemical vapor deposition method, and thus has good utility as a thermoelectric material. In addition, we compared the power factor according to the high-angle tilt boundary density of the synthesized graphene. In conclusion, if the thermal conductivity of graphene is measured and the figure of merit (ZT), which is a thermoelectric performance index, is calculated, Graphene with subdomains with high-angle tilt boundaries is expected to show better performance than fins.
