This thesis presents an energy efficient, low complexity, and PVT insensitive Impulse Radio-Ultra Wide Band (IR-UWB) transmitter. By switching on/off an oscillator, high order derivative of Gaussian pulse which is necessary for UWB transmission is achieved. Implemented in a 65nm CMOS technology, the proposed pulse generator is designed to have frequency centering at 4.5GHz and satisfy the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) spectral mask. Under 1.2V supply along with 1.4ns input data duration, the output pulse spectrum has peak-to-peak voltage approximately equal to 200mV, ensuring the transmission for 1.4GHz of -10dB BW. The effect of pulse's boundary on system's performance is also shown. By employing Gaussian-like envelope, convincing performance in terms of sidelobe suppression is obtained. A PVT compensation circuit is adopted to overcome the common weakness of full-analog pulse generator topology. After all, 2.7pJ per pulse is reported as the energy consumption of the pulse generator's core.
