The chemostat behavior of Rhodotorula glutinis NRRL. Y-1091 grown on nitrogen-limited media is very abnormal, it``s steady-state biomass in chemostat dramatically decreases as growth rate increases. As the result, maximum lipid productivity is shown at a low dilution rate of 0.02 h-1 as 0.09 g/1.h. When ferrus, manganese, pantothenic acid, adn copper were added to above control media, the degree of biomass decrease according to dilution rate was reduced, and maximum lipid productivity was 0.21 g/I.h at a relatively high dilution rate of 0.1 h-1. Results show that the supplement of trace elements and vitamins can affect the chemostat behavior of R. glutinis, indication that the growth of R. glutinis is limited by two or more substrates with control media in chemostat. To reveal the effects of each trace elements and pantothenic acid on the utilization of carbon source, mass and energy balance analysis was performed at D=0.08 h-1. In the case of control media, energetic yield and metabolic heat portion were 0.517 and 0.252, respectively. And with the Znsupplemented media, energetic yield and metabolic heat portion were 0.751 and 0.199, respectively. That is, the supplements increase not only biomass but the efficiency of carbon source.eng
