Recently, radiation-induced corrosion of copper (Canister) is a major issue to develop and build a deep geological repository system in Sweden (KBS-3). Copper is also candidate material for canister to store spent nuclear fuel or high level waster in South Korea. Until now, the radiation-induced corrosion of copper has poor responsibilities in the experimental results. This could be originated from the lack of understanding of mechanisms of radiation-induced process. This research designed to observe and reveal effects of hydrogen peroxide, which is the major product of radiolysis of water, to sulfide induced corrosion of Cu under anaerobic condition. Herein, the authors describes the plan for research and expected results. A very pure copper ingot (99.992%, SKB) was fabricated to make copper specimens (1x1x0.2 cm3). Small (50 ml) bottles will be used to contain the copper specimens and 1 mM of H2O2 and 1 mM of sulfide. The bottles will be placed in glove box and water bath to maintain anaerobic condition and temperature. The copper specimens will be extracted every 2 weeks and will be measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cathodic reduction method to observe properties and quantity of copper oxide. The chemical species in remaining solutions will be analyzed via ion selective electrode (sulfide), pH and dissolved oxygen meter, and ICP-OES (copper). Throughout this research, authors expects to reveal the role of hydrogen peroxide to sulfide induced corrosion of copper. Ultimately, this research will be the fundamental to understand and minimize the huge uncertainty in radiation-induced corrosion of copper.
