dc.description.abstract | Research and development of mobile relay base stations (MRBSs) in mobile networks have accommodated the challenges in providing satisfactory coverage and connectivity performance to data-hungry devices and applications, especially in urgent situations and remote environments such as earthquake and tsunami areas. Furthermore, multi-layer mobile network divides the total distance between a user equipment (UE) and macrocell base station (MBS) into multiple hops, which enables data to transmit at a higher bit rate over each hop with a lower total power consumption. However, multi-hopping through multi-layer mobile network causes delay penalty to packets, which is fatal to delay sensitive packets in life limited mobile networks. To guarantee successful transmission of data packets, avoid packet loss due to packet delay expiration in intermediate MRBSs from the cascading multi-layer mobile networks is crucial, which needs elaborately minimized packet delay and optimally controlled service in any intermediate MRBSs. In this dissertation, a cascading multi-layer mobile network is presented and various traffic service schemes in intermediate MRBSs are introduced to analyze the effect of radio resource management techniques on packet delay minimization. Based on the minimum packet delay derived, a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) model is presented and solved to demonstrate effectiveness of the optimal control of service in intermediate MRBSs. | - |
