Alumina-forming multiplex stainless steels were developed with a nominal composition range of Fe-(18–30)Ni-(16–24)Cr-(5–7)Al. Preliminary performance assessments including alloy design and high temperature steam oxidation were carried out for the screening of alloy compositions. A systematic evaluation between thermodynamic simulation (Thermo-Calc) and experimental results was performed along with 1200 ℃ steam thermogravimetric (TG) oxidation test. In addition, PWR autoclave corrosion behavior was analyzed for normal operation compatibility and hardness and tensile properties were assessed referring to ASTM standards. For the fabrication of cladding tube prototype, thermo-mechanical process was further engineered from the ingot melting to post heat-treatments conditions. As a result, austenite-ferrite duplex microstructure with nickel aluminide phase was obtained and forming chromia in normal operation and alumina at accident-line high temperature steam conditions, while providing high strength and excellent cold-fabricability.
